Alexandra Castro is a United Methodist missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries serving as treasurer of the Honduras United Methodist Mission and assistant to the mission superintendent, who is her husband, the Rev. Juan Guerrero.
The Honduras Mission was established in 1998 to minister among the Spanish-speaking population of the Central American country. It became a formal mission in 2002, and by early 2012 had 12 congregations and three developing churches. As a new mission, the work in Honduras requires the services of a financial professional. Alexandra works with the mission leadership to ensure that funds reach their intended ministry and are correctly accounted for.
Alexandra is a native of Cali, Colombia. She grew up and remained in a Pentecostal religious environment until she was in college, where she came in contact with the small Methodist Church of Colombia. She qualified as a certified public accountant (CPA) at Santiago University in Cali in 2004, and for two years worked as an accountant for the church.
Her husband became a pastor and served in a variety of locations. The couple was living in a rural mountainous area when the "call to mission" actually came. Alexandra tells this story:
August 17, 2010 was a joyful day. At last I could buy a car. I was very happy and in my prayers gave thanks to God. For months, I urgently need a car…In my dialogue with God, I didn't grow tired to giving thanks for it, but I also felt that God had given me so much while I had given God so little. I promise to upgrade my commitment to the church.
The next day my husband received a call telling him he was needed by the Methodist church in a far-off Honduras and that I was also needed to work with finances. It was an offer to become a missionary. But if I accepted I would have to leave my house, my parents, my church….and my car! Then I remember that the day before I had promised to serve the Lord with more dedication. So I left my country, my home, my parents, my church, and my car that I had worked so hard to buy in order to go to Honduras, where I now joyfully serve God.
Alexandra and Juan have one son, Jeremías Guerrero Castro, born in 2004.
Alexandra is available for Covenant support.
