Luis Aramayo, missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, is serving with the Christian Methodist Community of Venezuela (CMCV).
Along with his wife, Eunice, also a BGM missionary, Luis is a leadership development coordinator. Each has a different ministry empahsis, enabling their overall ministry to be aligned with the priority areas decided by the UMC General Conference: a) developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world, and b) creating new places for new people and revitalizing existing congregations. Luis also works in coordination with the church board of the CMCV to develop encounter workshops and programs oriented to affirm and strengthen local church schools, Bible studies and outreach programs based on Methodist-Wesleyan tradition in light of the Venezuelan context.
Luis previously served in Guatemala where he worked with the “Iglesia Evangélica Nacional Metodista Primitiva de Guatemala” (National Evangelical Primitive Methodist Church of Guatemala), an autonomous indigenous church serving in poor rural communities predominantly in the highland area.
After his commissioning in 2000, Luis was assigned to Iglesia Evangelica Unida del Ecuador (United Evangelical Church of Ecuador) and served as Christian Education advisor for five local churches in the Sierra region of the Andes mountains.
As a workshop leader Luis trains Sunday School teachers, lay pastors, church leaders and participants in community programs. In addition, Luis utilizes his gifts in music and liturgy within the congregational communities.
"Through liturgy, music and educational work, I know that I contribute to people's personal development, to their empowerment, to the formation of Christian values and shaping and living a Christian lifestyle in the communities," Luis shares. "In third world countries educational work in a holistic and inclusive perspective is a significant way of telling the Good News to everybody."
A native of Bolivia, Luis' experience in 1979 with teenagers and their mothers in a poor neighborhood in La Paz convinced him of God's call "to serve the small ones as an educator." He earned a degree in Pedagogy (educational sciences) in 1984 from the Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and then studied at the Universidad Mayor de San Simon in Bolivia.
Luis has worked for a number of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) as a consultant, advisor, teacher/trainer and team coordinator. In addition, he was employed by a number of educational institutions as teacher, professor and educational coordinator.
Luis is a member of the Iglesia Metodista Central in Montevideo, Uruguay (Methodist Church of Uruguay) and previously held church membership within the Iglesia E. Metodista en Bolivia (Evangelical Methodist Church of Bolivia) from 1979-1998, where he was a lay pastor.
He and Eunice have two children: Irene Eunice and Rene, who died in March 2008.
