Mission interns serve half of their three-year terms in international assignments and half in their home countries. Joy was commissioned in August 2011.
Mission for Migrant Workers works with migrants, 90 percent of them women, who are in crisis in Hong Kong. Some have been physically or sexually abused. Contract violations often leave the women without food, shelter, or clothing. The mission provides emergency services, legal assistance, educational workshops on worker's rights to those in need, and also takes action against exploitative and discriminatory policies. Joy works in a walk-in center, does follow up with migrants, and assists with other administrative and service activities.
Joy is a native of North Carolina and a member of the United Methodist Church in Yadkinville. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from the United Methodist-related Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina. At Pfeiffer, she was for three years a member of the Teen/College Consultative Board of the Women's Division of Global Ministries, and was a founding member of the United Methodist Women organization at the university. She has worked as a swim team coach and served as an ambassador for Pfeiffer.
Joy grew up in the church in her high school days "really began to form my relationship with Christ." Her involvement in the teen/college activities of the Women's Division gave her a keen sense of the importance of social justice. She reports a decline in her awareness of a personal relationship with Christ during her second year in college, a sense restored during a mission trip to Nicaragua during her junior year. Participation in Salem Chapel, a local mission-driven community, also restored her sense of purpose.
In 2010, she went on a mission trip to Kenya with a group of persons she had never met before, learning lessons about relating to strangers that will help her as a mission intern. "During the trip, I gave to Christ what little control on my life I had and came home with a passion for justice and mission."
