How to Participate in The Advance
Your first call to mission is to make sure your church fulfills its World Service apportionment (World Service undergirds all mission programs of The United Methodist Church -- including Advance projects).
Then . . .
- Identify projects that interest you.
There are nearly 2,000 approved General Advance projects in more than 100 countries. Search our Catalog of General Advance Projects by country, by state, or by type of ministry (such as children, church buildings, housing development, livestock, scholarships, transportation, vocational training, and others) to find projects that you are interested in.
- Order resources.
There are many booklets, leaflets, posters, and videos related to the Advance. Most of them are FREE! Search our list of Literature and Videos to find out what is available and how to order it.
- Contact your conference secretary of global ministries.
They can tell you which projects your conference or district is adopting, inform you of what other churches are doing, or help you find mission speakers.
- Develop a mission program in your church.
Include Advance projects and missionaries in your mission plans. Involve members of all ages. Incorporate the Advance into your Christian education program. Establish exciting but realistic goals. When you begin to achieve those goals, make a churchwide celebration part of your mission program!
- Pray for the missionaries or projects you have chosen.
When you become a "partner in mission," your love, gifts, and prayers make a difference!
Five Good Reasons to Participate in the Advance
- YOU choose what YOU want to support.
Do you believe in reforestation . . .promoting literacy . . . building new churches? Are you interested in Angola . . .Indonesia . . . Mexico . . . Kentucky? Would you like to covenant with a missionary? When you give to an Advance ministry that you select, you express your faith in a personal way.
- You do it within The United Methodist Church.
All Advance ministries are related to annual conferences, central conferences, partner churches, or interfaith organizations; screened by the General Board of Global Ministries; and authorized by the General Council on Ministries.
- You can be sure your money will get there.
The General Council on Finance and Administration assures the accounting and transmission of every Advance gift.
- Your gift makes a difference.
Your gift will print a Bible . . . vaccinate a child . . .buy a bicycle for a pastor . . . dig a well . . . or whatever specific ministry you choose to support. Since 1948, millions of lives have been transformed -- one at atime -- because of an Advance gift from someone like you.
- 100 percent of your gift goes to the ministry you choose!
Where else can you choose what you want to support -- and know that 100 percent of your gift will go there? This is possible because all administrative and promotional costs of the Advance are covered by other fund sources.
