Northern District priorities:
•El Redentor Methodist Education Center - The city of Arica has a population of 150 thousand. It is located in the most Northern point of Chile. One half an hour from Peru to the North and two hours From Bolivia to the East. The Methodist Church was Established there in 1911. A Church was built-in the center of the City. At the same time they also purchased land on the outside of town, in what is now, the poorest part of the city. In this location there is a small church with a strong membership of twenty. Although the Methodist Church family is still a rather small percentage of the entire area, the church remains very active for the community with faithful members. The main purpose of this project is to provide availability of a Christian community center for the poorer area of town, for the people who cannot afford to participate in the central church downtown. The major goals of the project are to provide a safe clean and happy environment for the public (as well as the existing church members) and to nurture them physically as well as spiritually. It is also very important to be able to include sufficient area for food preparation, because for a lot of these children it will mean the addition of one, good, healthy meal to the scant rations they exist on now. Although the emphasis at this time is for a good solid start to the education of children of the community, it is our hope to greatly expand upon this as the facility becomes functional. Some of our hopes are for health and hygiene classes for the women of the area. Work on this project started five years ago. We had a good start and the first phase of construction has been completed. The work was not only done by Volunteer teams but also by the Methodist Mens groups of Northern Chile.
