 FACES OF HOPE
Aldersgate Camp – Little Rock, Arkansas
March 18-25, 2011

 
From its discovery in 1722 by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe to the present – Little Rock, Arkansas has long been a symbol of hope. The capital of Arkansas (known as “The Land of Opportunity”) was named “La Petite Roche” and served as an early landmark for explorers navigating the Arkansas River.  
 
How appropriate it is for the “Faces of Hope” event to bring an opportunity for Primetimers to provide mission service in communities in Little Rock, and to further understand poverty, hunger and homeless issues, while gaining an historical perspective of social issues through the lens of that city’s past and present. 
 
Accommodations for participants will be at beautiful Aldersgate Camp and most meals will be taken there as well. Lodging will be in cabins for men and cabins for women. (Please note - there is no provision for couples housing.) 
 
Activities during the week will include visits to:
Heifer International Headquarters and the model ranch
Bill Clinton Presidential Library
Central High School Museum (civil rights)
Theressa Hoover United Methodist Church
Heritage Arkansas Museum
 
Mission/service projects will provide a day with seniors at Aldersgate, providing help at the Rice Depot, serving meals to the homeless at Quapaw Quarter UMC and painting a Habitat for Humanity house.
 
Little Rock, Arkansas has been a place of hope since first being discovered almost 300 years ago.  This has continued through time and sometimes troubled situations, but with patience and perseverance, that spirit of optimism has prevailed to the present. Perhaps our Primetimers group will bring more of this to those we meet and work with during this event.

EVENT DATE:   March 18-25. 2011
 
EVENT COST PER PERSON:
$850.00 per person (includes housing, meals, local transportation, supplemental accident insurance, entrance fees and a GBGM administrative fee). Participants are also responsible for the cost of their transportation to and from the event.
 
ROOMS: Participants will stay at Camp Aldersgate and lodging will be in cabins for men and cabins for women. Please note there will be no provision for couples’ lodging. Each cabin sleeps 16 persons with bunk beds and there are three private showers and toilets in each cabin.  
 
MEALS: All meals are provided and most will be at Camp Aldersgate. The first meal will be dinner on Friday, March 18 and the last meal will be breakfast on Friday March 25. 
 
TRANSPORTATION: Participants should not make travel arrangements until instructed to do so by the Event Coordinator. Persons flying will come into Little Rock International Airport. Arrival should be between 2-4 p.m. on March 18 and plans to depart between 9-10 a.m. on March 25, 2011. Event coordinator will arrange shuttle pick-up and return – extra charge of $20.00 per person.
 
ESTIMATED PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE EVENT: Ability to walk short distances and to be able to step into/out of van. No hiking.
