ALL  CREATURES  GREAT  AND  SMALL

Epworth  by  the  Sea  -  St.  Simons  Island,  Georgia
November  7 - 12,  2010

Primetimers 2010 Event-Epworth by the Sea-Chapel with crossCome and explore the wonders of creation and the interdependence of various creatures on earth. Throughout the Primetimers event, participants will discover the natural wonders of Georgia’s renowned Golden Isles. The barrier islands are an outstanding laboratory to observe, study and learn how to protect, preserve and restore natural treasures living in the coastal marshlands and rivers. Primetimers will participate in an eco tour to observe local wildlife. A presentation entitled “Birds of a Feather” will introduce fascinating birds of the Golden Isles.

The group will also learn about the various environmental organizations in the region. A trip to Jekyll Island’s Georgia Sea Turtle Center will provide an opportunity to learn about the lives of endangered sea turtles and the Center’s effort of rescue and rehabilitation. A ferry will take the group to Cumberland Island National Seashore, one of the largest remaining maritime forests in the United States. There will also be a guided walk and boat tour of Okefenokee Swamp, a National Wildlife Refuge.

Primetimers 2010 Event-Epworth by the Sea buildings

Primetimers will be hosted by Epworth by the Sea, a hospitality ministry of the South Georgia Conference.

This 90-acre campus, located along the Frederica River and the intracoastal waterway with towering love oak trees, offers a serenely beautiful location for relaxation and contemplation. The center was founded under the leadership of Bishop Arthur J. Moore in 1949. It was named Epworth for the English boyhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who lived and worked on St. Simons Island in 1736-1737.

Participants will explore the island’s rich Methodist history through a lecture about John Wesley in Colonial Georgia and will have an opportunity to visit the Bishop Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum and Archives.

Participants will serve in mission through opportunities such as assisting in beach clean up on the Cumberland Island National Seashore, a part of the US National Park Service.

They will also serve as trail cutters by helping with plant removal. There may be opportunities for a planned historic garden.

Primetimers will come away with a new understanding of the created community.
