JUSTICE ON THE BORDER
First United Methodist Church, McAllen, TX
and Pharr United Methodist Church, Pharr, TX
February 11 - 20, 2010
A new Primetimers event is being offered on the Border of the United States and Mexico in early 2010. Participants will come together to learn from and with the Methodists in this area about justice issues that exist and affect us in this place. This will include both community based and church based ministries and programs. There will be opportunities for service as well as understanding the situation that faces those living on the Border and how a difference can be made.
During this week there will be presentations concerning several area programs including:
- Consulate of Mexico
- Migrant Farm Worker issues
- The Office of Immigration
- Education, health, legal and hunger related issues
- Economics on the Border
The group will travel away from the site to visit Good Neighbor Settlement House in Brownsville, TX, as well as Colonias of South Texas and Mexico Border Churches and their outreach ministries.
The hospital, Deportation Center and Church related schools and Feeding Programs in Reynosa, Mexico as well as THE WALL are also on the itinerary.
The JFON (Justice for our Neighbors) Program at Pharr United Methodist Church will provide opportunity for hands-on ministry during this event.
This Primetimers Event will be held in the McAllen District of the Southwest Texas Conference and Southern District of the Rio Grande Conference of the UMC. This is in the poorest area of the U.S. The group will learn how the “Border Area” U.S.A. and Mexico relate and about the issues affecting us BOTH. This will surely be a time of experiencing, listening and learning.
