The Life and Spirit of Appalachia

Henderson Settlement - Frakes, Kentucky
April 19 - 25, 2009

Retreat to this rural mountain community in Kentucky to learn about the life and spirit of Appalachia as well as various ministries provided within the Red Bird Missionary Conference. This event will be hosted by the Henderson Settlement, a Global Ministries-related National Mission Institution, committed to “meeting basic human needs in Appalachia.” Learn firsthand about the mission and ministry of the United Methodist Church in Appalachia.

Throughout this event, Primetimers will explore the history of three Appalachian settlement schools: Henderson Settlement, Red Bird Mission, and Pine Mountain Settlement School. Established in the early 20th century as educational facilities for Kentucky children, these institutions have evolved into the 21st century, adapting to a changing society with changing needs. After the schools were established, soon followed dormitories, farms, and additional staff persons, such as doctors, dentists, and social workers. In the 1970s, as public schools became more of an option for children in the area, the settlement schools adapted to address other community needs, such as providing adult literacy classes, maternal infant health outreach, and recreation for youth.

Primetimers will have an opportunity to learn about - and be a part of - the various ministries provided today. Participants will also get a sampling of Appalachian history and culture through the tales of a local storyteller and seeing a local craftsperson in action. Take a trip to the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park to view this major break in the Appalachian Mountains, carved over many years by wind and water. Experience the coal mining industry at the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum. There Primetimers will learn about the daily life of a coal miner as well as the impact that mining has had on the Bluegrass State.

Participants will serve in mission through opportunities, such as tutoring children in reading, working at the Opportunity Store, light duty in community home improvement, volunteering in the library, or helping to maintain the Henderson campus.

This is a mountainous, rural region which would require persons to be able to walk up and down steep slopes. There are almost no sidewalks at the locations visited during this event.
