After the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, UMVIM Jurisdictional Coordinators met with Rev. Gesner Paul, President, and additional leaders of the Eglise Methodiste d'Haiti (EMH, the Methodist Church of Haiti) to determine priority projects and propose a new organization to schedule and facilitate the placement of UMVIM teams to help with recovery and rebuilding. After the visit, the GBGM Mission Volunteers office and Jurisdictional VIM Coordinators proposed a Haiti Response Plan and Funding Proposal to the GBGM Board of Directors meeting in April 2010. The pilot plan was approved and US and Haiti offices established.
In October 2010, the GBGM and UMCOR Boards of Directors approved a full three year plan for the Haiti Response Project to continue the successful work of the pilot.

The staff of the Haiti Response Plan works in full cooperation with the Methodist Church of Haiti to identify and prioritize projects for UMVIM teams. The EMH takes the lead in determining which projects merit attention and funding. The Volunteer Management Coordinator then assigns teams based on this priority determination. In this way, we honor the letter and spirit of the program, which mandates that our work be Haitian-driven.
