Register for Fall Public Education Training Events

By Yvette Moore*

United Methodist Women members can learn how to work on public education issues in their local communities at two fall training events sponsored by the Women’s Division. The events are another step in United Methodist Women’s Campaign for Children Phase III emphasis on public education.

“Racial Justice Issues in Public Education” will convene Oct. 25 in Dallas, Texas; while the “Community Organizing in Public Education” training is set for Nov. 1 in Chicago, Ill. Registration deadline for both events is Sept. 15. A $40 registration fee includes lunch.

“United Methodist Women members who want to start something new in their communities or who’ve been working on public education and want more training, or want to see how others are doing it, should come to the event in Chicago,” explained Julie Taylor, Women’s Division executive for children, youth and family advocacy. “Women in communities experiencing racial problems, or where immigration is a big issue and they want to do something, should come to the Dallas event. We will include time for people to ask specific questions not addressed in the workshops at both events.”

Both events will include Bible study and workshops on how to create community partnerships to improve public education. Former Women’s Division President Carolyn Johnson of Indiana’s Purdue University will lead Bible study at the Dallas event. Leaders of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church’s “One Church, One School” program will participate in the events, as will staff of the Rural Education Trust Fund, Ms. Taylor said.

“We hope to model how to develop partnerships for public education,” Ms. Taylor said.
