Background / History

College teachers. English langauge is now a required subject in all primary and secondary schools in China. Improving English education depends on the training of qualified English teachers. One important way to meet this need is to improve the quality of teacher training colleges. Many teacher training colleges have only recently been promoted from the status of a three-year training program to college-level. As a result, there are a great many more students flooding into the colleges, but a shortage of teachers to teach them. Since these colleges are mostly located in remote areas and cannot afford to pay high salaries, it's very hard for them to find qualified foreign teachers to assist in their foreign language programs. Foreign teachers can help raise the language standards of both the students and the faculty.

Mission

Partnering with agencies and volunteers from overseas, Amity invites English teachers to serve in teacher training schools in western China in two-year teaching assignments where they become part of the school's English Department faculty teaching reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and English langauge teaching methodology. Through its Summer English Language Program Amity invites native fluency volunteers to provide short term experiences designed to help rural Chinese English teachers improve their speaking skills and listening comprehension, as well as to learn interactive teaching methods.

Goals & Objectives

To help improve the qualification of Chinese teachers of English and further English language education in poorer, rural areas.

Activities Plan

Upon arrival in China, new long-term teachers take part in an intensive summer training program to help acculturate them and familiarize them with the Chinese educational system. There is a mid-winter conference for long-term teachers where workshops are given by established teachers and critical issues and teaching methodologies are discussed. All long-term teachers are part of their college's English language department and carry a full teaching load which includes speaking, listening, reading, writing, and English language literature.

Project Outcomes

There will be better qualified, more confident Chinese teachers of English who return to their hometowns in the countryside and contribute to local primary and secondary school English-language education. This, in turn, will help children and youth acquire better English-langauge education, which will help them to pass English-langauge exams, one of the requirements to go on to further education past secondary school.

Project Indicators

The longer term teachers are responsible for teaching oral, listening, reading, writing and English literature classes at provincial teacher's colleges. They are part of the English language department of their institution, supervised by Chinese staff, and are expected to fulfil the college's teaching curriculum requirements. The short-term Summer English Langauge Program volunteers will focus on oral and listening skills for the Chinese teachers of English who are involved in summer courses.
